CLASSESSINGING Singing training is available as a private individual lesson or as part of a group. The classes encompass all aspects of vocal training and cover techniques such as breathing, projection and tone production. Musical interpretation is also studied using a variety of material including songs from musical shows, the classical repertoire and contemporary pop. DRAMA This course covers all aspects of drama including improvisation, characterisation, voice production and acting techniques. Students study different styles of theatre and are encouraged to work in groups and individually, promoting social skills and confidence. Medals can be taken in drama and productions are staged every year and at festivals. BALLET Ballet is a great way to develop poise, rhythm and grace with classes that are fun and up-to-date. Students will be able to work through recognised ballet grades according to ability and experience and take medals and exams. However, the classes will not just be geared towards exams, and there will be a strong emphasis on developing a joy of dance, encouraging freedom of expression and building creativity. TAP DANCE Tap dance has many origins and nowadays can take many forms, but all of them are lively and fun. Tap is also a great way to develop poise, balance and rhythm and is widely used in musical theatre and show dance. Students will learn different styles of tap, from modern show-style tap to a more laid-back authentic street tap, using modern music and jazz rhythms. Tap medals can be taken at all stages and ages. MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMERThe musical theatre performer course is designed for students who want to study all three aspects, dance, drama and singing in one session. Students take one hour of drama, one hour of group singing and one hour of musical theatre dance and there is continuity between the aspects studied to offer an all-round understanding of the three disciplines. Students in the infants or pre-school age range, enjoy a one-hour class that covers all aspects. STREET / HIP-HOP DANCE Street dance is one of the hottest dance styles around and is fed by popular culture so is an ever-changing entity. We teach a street jazz style which can be seen on many TV shows, danced by famous pop stars and groups. We also cover the basics of hip-hop with its break, popping and locking styles and encourage students to ‘freestyle’ ideas in improvisations to music. It's a great way to keep fit and can help develop good posture, rhythm and style Street dance uses music from the latest charts and medals can be taken in street dance at all ages and levels. MUSICAL THEATRE DANCE Studying musical theatre dance is an excellent way to gain a thorough knowledge of the many different dance styles used in modern musical theatre. It encompasses a range of exercises and techniques to prepare the body for dance and to ensure safe but creative movement. It is based on jazz as well as cabaret and modern dance, but students may also cover different musical and dance styles in a variety of shows from “Cats” to “We Will Rock You”. Students also learn the basic skills needed for theatre work and for auditions. Medal tests and exams can be taken in musical theatre dance. MODERN/STAGE/JAZZ DANCE This class incorporates the styles and techniques of modern dance including stage and jazz dance and will also be an introduction to basic contemporary dance techniques. Students may dance to a wide range of musical styles taken from modern musical theatre and instrumental, more expressive or lyrical styles. This class also covers jazz technique with its contractions and the inimitable ‘Fosse’ style. LATIN AND BALLROOM DANCE Latin and ballroom dance is a great form of social and competitive dance, danced with a partner. With the advent of “Strictly Come Dancing”, most people nowadays can regognise their cha-cha from their foxtrot! You do not need a partner to attend the class although existing partners are welcome to join. Latin consists of many rhythms including jive, cha-cha, samba, rumba and paso doble, but students will also learn the basics of other rhythms such as salsa, merengue and mambo. Ballroom covers dances such as waltz, quickstep, tango, Viennese waltz and foxtrot. Medal tests can be taken in both styles and there will also be the opportunity to enter competitions. YOUTH THEATRE (Junior: Ages 7-13) (Senior: Ages 14-21)Our youth theatres offer production opportunities for children attending the schools, and also for students from outside the school to gain valuable production experience. We perform 2-3 major productions a year including musicals, contemporary pieces and straight drama plays. Fees are based around productions rather than terms as there may be additional rehearsals closer to the show dates, in addition to weekly rehearsals.
